Schiff base

A general term for compounds discovered by the German organic chemist Hugo Schiff (1834-1915) ^. It has the general formula ^R1R2C = ^NR3 . It is produced together with water when an aldehyde or ketone reacts with a primary amine. It is also known by other names such as azomethine, anil, and imine.

Aliphatic hydrocarbon groups are mostly colorless liquids, but aromatic ones are often pale yellow solids. In general, aromatic derivatives are easier to synthesize and more stable. They are easily hydrolyzed by acid catalysts. Schiff bases are also thought to be intermediates in transamination reactions in vivo.

ドイツの有機化学者であるシッフHugo Schiff（1834―1915）が発見した化合物の総称。一般式R¹R²C=NR³で示される。アルデヒドまたはケトンと第一アミンを作用させると、水とともに生じる。アゾメチン、アニル、イミンなどの別名がある。

　脂肪族炭化水素基をもったものはほとんどが無色の液体であるが、芳香族のものは淡黄色の固体となる場合が少なくない。一般に芳香族の誘導体のほうが合成しやすく安定である。酸触媒で容易に加水分解される。生体内におけるアミノ基転移反応でもシッフ塩基が中間体となると考えられている。
