A general term for compounds discovered by the German organic chemist Hugo Schiff (1834-1915) . It has the general formula R1R2C = NR3 . It is produced together with water when an aldehyde or ketone reacts with a primary amine. It is also known by other names such as azomethine, anil, and imine. Aliphatic hydrocarbon groups are mostly colorless liquids, but aromatic ones are often pale yellow solids. In general, aromatic derivatives are easier to synthesize and more stable. They are easily hydrolyzed by acid catalysts. Schiff bases are also thought to be intermediates in transamination reactions in vivo. 一般式R1R2C=NR3で示される。
