Stone lantern - Ishidourou

Japanese: 石灯籠 - いしどうろう
Stone lantern - Ishidourou
A stone lantern. From top to bottom, its structure consists of a jewel, a shade, a fire box, a base, a pole, and a base. The ancient style from China and Korea was brought to Japan along with Buddhism, and was originally used as an offering to shrines and temples, with only one erected in the center of the front. The oldest surviving example from the early Nara period can be found in front of the main hall of Taima-ji Temple. From the Momoyama period onwards, they were also used in tea gardens and ordinary gardens. Shrine and temple lanterns have standard shapes that are octagonal, hexagonal, and square, but garden lanterns deviate from these standards, and various new types were devised.
