Compress - Shippu

It is a type of poultice treatment in which a cloth soaked in medicinal liquid or water is applied to the affected area to relieve symptoms, and is particularly used for inflammation. There are hot and cold compresses, and in both cases, soft absorbent towels, gauze, flannel, etc. are used. Hot compresses are generally considered effective in many cases because they improve blood circulation, enhance phagocytosis, and activate organ function. They are particularly effective when there is abdominal distension or difficulty in expelling gas. However, in severe acute inflammation, they should be avoided because they accelerate local congestion and destruction, increasing pain. For example, if a hot compress is used in the case of inflammation within the abdominal cavity, such as acute appendicitis, there is a risk of accelerating the progression of the inflammation and causing perforation. In such cases, a cold compress must be used. Cold compresses are effective for bruises, swelling, sprains, and subcutaneous bleeding, but it is difficult to determine whether hot or cold should be used, so it is advisable to seek the advice of a doctor. Compresses for wounds and eyes should be applied aseptically using disinfectant materials to prevent suppuration and infection. When applying a poultice, care should be taken to avoid burns or frostbite on the local skin.

布に薬液か水を浸して患部に当て、症状の軽減を図る罨法(あんぽう)の一治療法で、とくに炎症に対して用いられる。温湿布と冷湿布とがあり、いずれも布は吸湿性のある柔らかいタオル、ガーゼ、フランネルなどを用いる。温湿布は一般的には血行をよくし、食菌作用を高め、臓器の機能を活発にするので多くの場合有効とされる。とくに腹部脹満(ちょうまん)時、排ガス困難時には効果がある。しかし著しい急性炎症では局所のうっ血と破壊を速めて痛みを増すので避けなければならない。たとえば、急性虫垂炎のような腹腔(ふくくう)内の炎症の際に温湿布を用いると、炎症の進行を速めて穿孔(せんこう)をおこす危険もある。このような場合には、かならず冷湿布を用いなくてはならない。打ち身、腫脹(しゅちょう)、捻挫(ねんざ)、皮下出血には冷湿布が有効であるが、温・冷の適用の判断はむずかしいので医師の指導を仰ぐことが望ましい。創傷や目の湿布は、化膿(かのう)防止や感染防止のために消毒材料を用いて無菌的に行う。湿布時は、局所の皮膚が熱傷、凍傷などにかからないように注意する。
