During the process of mountain building, when a folded mountain range begins to form from a geosyncline, deposits unique to the surrounding geosyncline are formed. They generally consist of monotonous alternations of graded sandstone and shale, chert, and limestone with few fossils. When the uplift of a mountain range is intense, conglomerate is also formed. A typical example is the Alps in Europe. (→ Molasses )
