Aoki (English spelling) Aucuba japonica

Japanese: アオキ(青木) - アオキ(英語表記)Aucuba japonica
Aoki (English spelling) Aucuba japonica
An evergreen shrub of the Cornaceae family native to Japan, it grows wild in mountainous areas south of the Kanto region. Its name, Aoki, comes from the fact that its branches are green. It grows to a height of around 2m and branches profusely, with green and smooth branches when young. The leaves are opposite, oblong, 10-15cm long, highly glossy, and have coarse sawtooth edges. It is dioecious. The flowers bloom in spring and are small, with four purple-brown petals. From late autumn to early spring, beautiful oval red fruits ripen. They are drupes, containing seeds enclosed in a hard kernel. There are many horticultural varieties, and they are resistant to insect and smoke damage, so they are used as garden trees and bonsai.
