…Business history became an independent academic field from socio-economic history in the mid-1920s, when a business history course was established at the Harvard Business School. The first professor, NSB Grass (1884-1956), established the position of business history as studying business administration itself, such as business policy, management direction, and management control, in accordance with the various organizations and functions within a company, rather than examining the history of corporate management in relation to changes in socio-economic conditions. Many business historians gathered under Grass, published the Business History Review (launched as the newsletter of the Business History Society), and worked on case studies of many American and European companies, publishing the results of the latter as the Harvard Business History Series. …
