(1) Asynchronous transfer mode. Asynchronous transfer mode is a transmission and switching technology that is indispensable for high-speed digital communication networks. Specifically, it refers to the switch that is the core of the digital network. In asynchronous transfer mode, the information to be sent is divided into short, fixed-length data streams, and a header such as the destination is added to the beginning of the stream. The multiple pieces of information sent at any speed are switched according to the header without synchronization. （１）asynchronous transfer modeの略。高速通信デジタルネットワークに欠くことのできない伝送・交換技術の非同期転送モード。具体的にはデジタルネットワークの中核となる交換機をも意味する。非同期転送モードでは，送りたい情報を短い固定長のデータ列に分割してその先頭に宛先などのヘッダーをつけて送り出し，送り出された複数の任意の速度の情報を同期させずに，そのヘッダーに応じて切り替える交換作業をする。短いデータ列の時分割多重のため，電話の無音声部分など情報のない期間に他の情報が伝送する，いわゆる統計的多重効果が現れやすい特徴を有している。この技術は，電話，パソコン通信，画像情報などの各種情報をデジタル信号で統合的に伝送できる広帯域ISDNを実現するための基幹技術として期待されてもいる。また，ATMフォーラムと呼ばれる業界団体があり，ATMの普及促進や要素技術の標準化を進めている。（２）automated（automatic） teller machineの略。現金自動預入支払機などと訳される。キャッシュ・カードや通帳を利用して現金預入れ・預金引出しや送金ができる。銀行など金融機関のほかコンビニエンス・ストアなどにも広く設置され顧客の利便に供しているが，偽造カードによる被害（カード犯罪）が増えるなどの問題もある。
