Year of birth: Year of birth and death unknown. A monk of the Ritsu sect who came to Japan during the Nara period. Born in Yizhou, Tang, and with the secular surname Wang. He studied under Ganjin and received instruction in the Vinaya and Tendai schools, and after many hardships, he followed Ganjin and came to Japan in January of the 6th year of Tenpyo Shoho (754). He assisted his teacher in spreading the precepts and also worked hard to build Toshodaiji Temple.
