[Died] November 2, 1992. Bel Air, California. American film producer, director, and screenwriter. Born Harry Eugene Roach. Along with Mack Sennett, he is known as one of the creators who established the style of early Hollywood comedy films. After changing jobs several times, he entered the film industry in 1912 as a supporting actor in a western. In 1914, he founded a company to produce comedies starring Harold Lloyd. Five years later, he established a new company, Hal Roach Studios, in Culver City, California, and produced a series of Lloyd films, including Safety Last (1923). In the 1920s, he produced about 2,000 short comedies and numerous feature films, including the series starring Will Rogers and the Our Gang series. His most famous work is a comedy starring the duo Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy. Many filmmakers, including director Leo McCarey, actresses Jean Harlow and Paulette Goddard, worked with Loach as newcomers and went on to success in Hollywood. He won the Academy Award for Best Short Story for The Music Box (1932), starring Laurel and Hardy, and "Bored of Education" (1936), from the "Boys Over Boards" series. In 1983, he was awarded an Honorary Academy Award.

[Died] March 1, 2019. Guilford, Connecticut, United States. Born in Ireland, Eamonn Kevin Roche is an American architect. His full name is Eamonn Kevin Roche. He received his bachelor's degree in architecture from the National University of Ireland, Dublin, in 1945. After working briefly in Dublin and London, he went to the United States and studied architecture under Ludwig Mies van der Rohe at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago. After working briefly at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, he joined the Eero Saarinen office in 1950. After Saarinen's death in 1961, he took over the office and completed Saarinen's unfinished projects, including the Dulles International Airport terminal building in Washington, DC (1962) and the stainless steel Gateway Arch in St. Louis, Missouri (1965). In 1966, he founded Kevin Roche, John Dinkel & Associates. His works include the University of Massachusetts Art Center (1964-74), the Ford Foundation headquarters in New York (1968), General Foods headquarters (1977), and Bouygues headquarters in the suburbs of Paris (1983). He developed a wide variety of designs for each project, and was characterized by his diversity and monumental expression on an urban scale. He has received numerous awards, including the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 1982. He served as president of the American Academy of Arts and Letters from 1994 to 1997.

Born June 17, 1936 in Nuneaton. British film director. Full name Kenneth Loach. Known as a master of social realism. He studied law at Oxford University, but became interested in acting and joined a theatre company after graduating. He became a director at the BBC and directed documentary dramas in the 1960s. He made his debut as a film director with Poor Cow (1967). His moving film Kes (1970), which depicts a boy who has no place at home or at school and who connects with a young peregrine falcon, was highly acclaimed. His political thriller Hidden Agenda (1990), set in Northern Ireland, won the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival. His subsequent films, Riff-Raff (1991) and Raining Stones (1993), also depicted the daily lives of the British working class in a realistic way, and Ladybird Ladybird (1994) was also praised. Set in Ireland during the 1920 War of Independence from Britain, The Wind That Shakes the Barley (2006) depicts young people seeking freedom for their homeland, and won the Palme d'Or, the highest award at the Cannes Film Festival. In 2003, he was awarded the Praemium Imperiale in Memory of Prince Takamatsu.

Born January 10, 1924 in Newland, North Carolina
[Died] August 16, 2007. Jazz drummer from New York, New York, USA. Real name Maxwell Roach. Entered the jazz world in his late teens and established his reputation at the age of 20. Played with Charlie Parker and Miles Davis, and formed a quintet with trumpeter Clifford Brown in 1954. In the 1960s, he became more active, incorporating social appeals into his music and protesting against racial discrimination. In the 1970s, he formed the percussion group M'Boom and taught at the University of Massachusetts, and continued to tour until the early 21st century, playing with Cecil Taylor and Anthony Braxton in 1980. First visited Japan in 1963.

アメリカ合衆国のジャズ・ドラマー。本名 Maxwell Roach。 10代の後半でジャズ界に入り，20歳で名声を確立。チャーリー・パーカー，マイルス・デービスらと共演し，1954年にトランペット奏者のクリフォード・ブラウンと組んでクインテットを結成した。 1960年代に入ってからは音楽に社会的なアピールを盛り込み，人種差別に抗議するなど，意欲的に活動。 1970年代には打楽器グループ「ウン・ブーム」M'Boomを結成，またマサチューセッツ大学で教鞭をとるなど多彩に活躍し，1980年にはセシル・テイラーやアンソニー・ブラクストンらと共演，21世紀初頭までツアーを続けた。 1963年初来日。
