An institution of higher education under the direct control of the French Ministry of Education. Francis I, acting on the advice of the humanist Guillaume Budé, founded the school in March 1530 under the name of the Royal Faculty. Initially, there were only five lecturers, teaching Hebrew (2), Greek (2), and mathematics (1). In opposition to the University of Paris, which had been dominated by scholasticism since the Middle Ages, the school's main purpose was to teach classical languages and natural sciences, which had been excluded from the university curriculum, and to spread humanist ideas. It was guaranteed administrative autonomy and independence so as not to be subject to pressure from the university, and it subsequently expanded in size, adding new subjects such as Latin, philosophy, and medicine.

フランス文部省直轄の高等教育機関。フランソア1世が人文主義者のギヨーム･ビュデの進言を入れて，1530年3月，王立教授団という名の下に創設した。当初は5人の講師しかおらず，ヘブライ語(2人)，ギリシア語(2人)，数学(1人)を教えた。中世以来のスコラ学が支配するパリ大学に対抗して，大学のカリキュラムから締め出された古典語，自然科学を講じ，人文主義の思想を普及させることが主たる目的だった。大学からの圧力が及ばないように行政上の自治･独立を保証され，その後規模も拡大して，ラテン語，哲学，医学といった新しい教科が増えた。
