Year of death: May 28, 4th year of Daido (July 14, 809) Year of birth: Tenpyo 3 (731) A military officer in the Nara and early Heian periods. Son of Otomo no Kojihi. Also known as Otomaro. In 779, he was promoted to Junior Fifth Rank, Lower, and the following year to Emon no Kami. In 781, he became Chugu no Jo and also Saeki no Jo. In 782, he was appointed Hitachi no Suke, and the following year he became Vice Shogun of the Eastern Expedition. In 783, Otomo no Yakamochi became Shogun of the Eastern Expedition. In 784, he became Uchūben (right middle officer) and Sachūben (left middle officer) of the Kyoto government, and the following year he also became Empress's palace attendant. In 790, he was promoted to Junior Fourth Rank, Lower, and appointed Seitō Taishi (Emperor of the East), but later the title was changed to Seii Taishi (Emperor of the Barbarians). In 791, he received the ceremonial sword as Seitō Taishogun, and Vice Shogun Sakanoue no Tamuramaro and his men led a great victory over the Emishi. In 792, he returned his ceremonial sword, and was awarded the Junior Third Rank and Order of Merit 2 for his military achievements. He died with the rank of Junior Third Rank in the abdicated order.
