Although it is also called periodontal disease, the correct term is chronic marginal periodontitis. This disease is characterized by deep gingival pockets forming around the teeth, bleeding and pus coming from the gums, absorption of the alveolar bone, and loosening of the teeth. It is a chronic inflammatory disease of the periodontal tissues, and is a type of periodontitis. It is caused by chronic irritation such as tartar deposition and excessive load, and systemic factors such as metabolic disorders also play a role. Treatment in the early stages involves gingival cleaning and tartar removal. In severe, advanced cases require surgery and tooth extraction.

歯周病ともいうが，正しくは慢性辺縁性歯周組織炎。歯の周囲に深い歯肉嚢ができ，歯肉（歯ぐき）から血や膿(うみ)が出，歯槽骨が吸収され，歯がゆるむなどの症状が現れる疾患。歯周組織の慢性炎症性疾患で，歯周炎の一つ。原因は歯石沈着などの慢性の刺激，負担過重で，代謝異常などの全身的因子も関与する。治療は初期には歯肉洗浄，歯石除去。進行した重症例では手術，抜歯。
