History of Thought - Shisoushi

Japanese: 思想史 - しそうし

It refers to historical writing that seeks to grasp the overall trends, styles, and structures of thought across the histories of various academic theories, literary history, art history, and other individual fields of thought. However, the concept of intellectual history can be ambiguous depending on the way of thinking about the "ideas" in question and the method of historical writing. The foundation for exploring the overall history of thought was established in the 18th century in Western Europe with the formation of the idea of the "progress" and "development" of the human spirit. This led to the development of a perspective that grasps the history of ideas by correlating human happiness (social reality) with the development of the spirit (such as the French Enlightenment).

もろもろの学問の学説史や，文学史，芸術史など，個別分野の諸思想の歴史に対して，それらを横断してなんらかの全体的な思想の動向，様式，構造などをとらえる歴史記述をいう。しかし，対象となる〈思想〉についての考え方や歴史記述の方法によって，思想史の概念も多義的となる。　全体史的な思想の歴史が探求の対象となるについては，西欧の18世紀以降，人間精神の〈進歩〉〈発展〉という観念の形成がその地盤をつくった。そして，人間の幸福(社会的現実)と精神の発展を相関させながら観念(イデー)の歴史をとらえる見方が生まれた(フランス啓蒙主義など)。
