A former town in Shizunai County in south-central Hokkaido. Facing the Hidaka Mountains to the northeast and the Pacific Ocean to the southwest, it occupies the Shizunai River basin. The Hidaka Main Line runs through the town. The Niikappu breeding farm, covering 330 km2 , is located across Saru, Niikappu, and Shizunai counties. Originally used to raise stud horses, it now mainly raises dairy cows. It is also a famous cherry blossom spot. In March 2006, it merged with Mitsuishi Town, Mitsuishi County, to become a town, forming Shinhidaka Town, Hidaka County. Area: 801.49 km2 . Population: 22,647 (2003). 北海道中南部,静内郡の旧町。北東は日高山脈,南西は太平洋に面し,静内川流域を占める。日高本線が通じる。沙流(さる)・新冠(にいかっぷ)・静内3郡にまたがる330km2の新冠種畜牧場があり,もとは種馬を飼育したが,いまは乳牛飼育が中心。桜の名所でもある。2006年3月,三石郡三石町と合併し町制,日高郡新ひだか町となる。801.49km2。2万2647人(2003)。
