Japanese: 高接病 - たかつぎびょう

This is a viral disease that occurs when a new variety of scion is grafted onto an existing apple tree to update an apple variety. Grafting disease is unique to Japan, where the rootstock is made of Marubakaido or Mitsubakaido. If a virus that was latent in the scion of a Delicious variety spreads through the intermediate stock and then infects the rootstock, necrosis and grooves form in the xylem and bark of the rootstock, leading to poor growth of the aboveground part and death within a few years. リンゴの品種更新の際，既存のリンゴ樹に新品種の穂木を高接ぎした場合に発生するウイルス病。高接病は，台木にマルバカイドウやミツバカイドウを用いる日本特有の病気で，デリシャス系などの穂木に潜在感染していたウイルスが，中間台を経て台木に感染すると，台木の木部や皮部に壊疽（えそ）や溝が生じ，数年で地上部の生育不良，枯死という症状を招く。無病の穂木を用いることにより防ぐ。【夏秋知英】
