Born: July 23, 1713, Lisbon [Died] March 20, 1792. Roman Portuguese enlightenment writer. Jesuit friar. Studied at the University of Évora and later received a doctorate in theology in Rome. Appointed diplomat by the Marquis of Pombal. Passionate about teaching Portuguese and Latin, he made an effort to simplify the orthography. His works include Verdadeiro Método de Estudar (1746), which he wrote with the aim of elevating Portuguese culture to the level of European culture.
