Therefore, many people, especially in France, are of the opinion that the word sensationnisme, which comes from the correct etymology, should be used to describe sensualism, rather than sensualisme. …

…sensualisme(感覚論)という用語は19世紀初頭以来，フランスで使われており，フランスの《アカデミー辞典》には，1878年版から採録されている。イギリスでは，sensualistという語は，すでに18世紀以来使用されていたが，この語は語源どおり〈快楽主義的〉〈肉欲主義的〉という軽蔑的意味しかもっていなかった(バークリー《アルシフロン》第2巻，16章)。したがってとくにフランスでは感覚論をあらわすには，sensualismeではなく，正しい語源に由来するsensationnismeという語を使うべきである，とする意見も少なくない。…
