Japanese: 地震工学 - じしんこうがく（英語表記）earthquake engineering

An academic field that integrates science and technology to prevent and reduce damage caused by earthquakes. The term "earthquake engineering" was originally used as a translation of the English term "engineering seismology," but is now used to include earthquake-resistant engineering as well. The World Conference on Earthquake Engineering, an international conference held every four years since 1956 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, and related international conferences present research results related to seismology and earthquake-resistant engineering. This conference is translated as the World Conference on Earthquake Engineering.

地震による被害を防御･軽減せしめるための科学技術を総合した学問分野。〈地震工学〉の語はもともと英語engineering seismologyの訳語として使われたが，現在では，耐震工学をも包含した意味で使われる。サンフランシスコ地震(1906)発生の50周年を記念して1956年以後原則として4年ごとに開催されている国際会議World Conference on Earthquake Engineeringおよび関連国際学会では地震学と耐震工学に属する研究成果が発表されるが，この会議を世界地震工学会議と訳すことによる。
