Hououzan Yokoanagun

Japanese: 法皇山横穴群 - ほうおうざんよこあなぐん

These caves are located in Chokushi-machi, Kaga City, Ishikawa Prefecture. There are 77 caves, mainly around the Houou mountain range overlooking the Enuma Basin in the south of Ishikawa Prefecture. However, including unconfirmed caves, the total number is said to be at least 200. During the Taisho era, Sanpei Ueda excavated some and introduced them to the academic world, and in 1964-66, the local Daishoji High School conducted a distribution survey and discovered new caves. In 1967 and 1968, the Kaga City Board of Education conducted further excavations for maintenance purposes, striving to clarify the whole picture. They are dug into the soft tuff bedrock, and are not uniform; some consist of a burial chamber and an antechamber, some have a burial chamber and an antechamber, and some have three chambers: a burial chamber, an antechamber, and an antechamber.

石川県加賀市勅使町に所在する横穴群。石川県南部の江沼盆地をのぞむ法皇山塊を中心に営まれ，77基を数える。ただし未確認分などを含めると，総数は200基を下らないという。大正年間に上田三平が一部を発掘して学界に紹介し，1964‐66年に地元の大聖寺高校が分布調査を行って，新たな横穴を発見した。さらに67,68年には，加賀市教育委員会が整備のためにあらためて発掘調査を実施するなど，全容の解明につとめた。軟質凝灰岩の地山（じやま）に掘りこまれ，玄室と羨道（せんどう）とからなるもの，玄室と前室とをもつもの，玄室，副室，前室の3室をもつものなど一様でない。
