Although it is a printing tool used in Japanese woodblock prints, baren has become an international word. There are ateji characters such as umaren, umaren, and haren. It is said to be a corruption of the Korean word ma-ryotsu (a printing tool made from a horse's mane), but the origin is unknown. It is also unclear when it first came into use, but it was commonly used during the Edo period. A disk-shaped "atekawa" (available in various sizes up to about 20 cm in diameter) made by gluing together about 40 sheets of thin Mino paper or ganpishi paper and coating them with lacquer is placed on top of a disk made of bamboo bark wrapped in a spiral shape, and then wrapped in flexible bamboo bark.
