Alcan is one of the two largest aluminum bullion manufacturers in the world, alongside ALCOA. It is often abbreviated as Alcan. Its head office is in Montreal, Canada. It has an integrated production system that covers everything from mining bauxite, the raw material for aluminum, to smelting, rolling, and tertiary processing, and controls approximately 34% of the world's aluminum smelting capacity and approximately 45% of the bullion trade volume. Alcan's history began in 1928 when it separated from ALCOA. At the time, criticism of ALCOA's monopoly was growing in the United States, and the company listened to the government's advice and separated and reorganized its Canadian subsidiary, Northern Aluminum Co., as Aluminum Ltd. Co. in 1928, and at the same time transferred all of its overseas business holdings to the new company.
