German composer and conductor. Also known as Pfitzner. Born in Moscow to German parents, he returned to Germany in 1872. He studied composition at the Hoch Conservatory in Frankfurt and released his first opera, Poor Heinrich, in 1895. After working as a conductor and educator in Berlin and Munich, he served as director and music director of the Strasbourg Conservatory (now Strasbourg) from 1908 to 1918. After World War I, he returned to Berlin and Munich as an educator. His representative work, the opera Palestrina (1910-1915, premiered in Munich under the baton of B. Walter), is known as a work that expresses his artistic beliefs through the human image of Palestrina, the master of Renaissance music, and was praised by T. Mann and others. His style follows the style of German Romanticism such as Brahms and R. Wagner, and he is called "the last romantic." Other works include songs, orchestral pieces, concertos, and chamber music.
