Oe no Koretoki

A man of letters in the mid-Heian period. He was called Gounagon. He was the son of Chifuru and the grandfather of Masahira. He held prominent positions as a scholar, including Doctor of Literature, University Head, Shikibu Daibu, and Togu Gakushi, before rising to the rank of councilor. In 957 (the first year of Tentoku), he became the head of the Senkokushisho (National History Office) and was involved in the compilation of the Shin Kokushi (New National History). He rose to the rank of Junior Third Rank Chunagon and died on June 7, the third year of Owa. His edited works include Nikkanshu, Senzaikaku, and Yojoho. He served as a judge at the Tentoku Dairi Shiawase Poetry Contest in 959, and was involved in the selection of the Kongenroku Byobushi folding screen poems. He also recommended era names, selected the names of successive emperors, and lectured the emperor on Chinese classics. These remarkable achievements contributed to the expansion of the Go family's influence in literary society, along with his cousin Asatsuna. However, he was said to be inferior to Asatsuna as a poet, and indeed few works remain.

平安中期の文人。江納言(ごうなごん)と称された。千古(ちふる)の子。匡衡(まさひら)の祖父。文章博士(もんじょうはかせ)、大学頭(だいがくのかみ)、式部大輔(だいぶ)、東宮学士等の学者としての顕職を歴任して、参議に上る。957年（天徳1）撰(せん)国史所別当となり『新国史』の編纂(へんさん)に携わる。従(じゅ)三位中納言に至り、応和(おうわ)3年6月7日没。編著として『日観集(にっかんしゅう)』『千載佳句(せんざいかく)』『養生方(ようじょうほう)』がある。959年の「天徳内裏詩合(てんとくだいりしあわせ)」には判者を務め、『坤元録屏風詩(こんげんろくびょうぶし)』の撰進にあたる。さらに年号の勘申(かんじん)、歴代天皇の諱(いみな)の撰申、天皇への漢籍の講義などを行う。これらの目覚ましい活躍によって、従兄の朝綱(あさつな)とともに文人社会での江家(ごうけ)の勢力の伸張に寄与した。しかし詩文の作者としては朝綱に一歩譲ると評され、確かに残された作品も少ない。
