The capital of the state of Norte de Santander in the eastern part of northern Colombia. It is located where the eastern Andes mountain range branches off into the Sierra de Perija to the north and the Sierra de Merida to the northeast, and is close to the border with Venezuela. It was founded in 1733. It was destroyed by an earthquake in 1875, but was rebuilt, and is now a beautiful town with wide tree-lined streets and parks. It is the center of an agricultural and livestock region where coffee, sugar cane, and other crops are cultivated and livestock are raised. In addition to distributing agricultural and livestock products, various light industries are located in the city. An oil field spreads to the north of the city. It is the home of the University of Santander (1962). It is connected to other cities in the country by rail, road, and air, and also connects with Venezuela as the country's eastern gateway. コロンビア北部東寄り,ノルテデサンタンデル州の州都。アンデスの東部山脈が北方へのペリハ山脈,北東方へのメリダ山脈に分岐するあたりに位置し,ベネズエラとの国境に近い。 1733年建設。 1875年地震で破壊されたのち再建され,現在並木に縁どられた広い街路や公園のある美しい町となっている。コーヒー,サトウキビなどの栽培と牧畜の盛んな農牧地帯の中心地で,農畜産物の集散を行うほか,市内には各種軽工業が立地する。市の北方には油田地帯が広がる。サンタンデル大学 (1962) 所在地。鉄道,道路,空路により同国諸都市と結ばれるほか,同国の東の門戸としてベネズエラとも連絡。人口 36万 5798 (1985) 。
