...The Palestinian National Charter, adopted in July 1968, stipulated that the only means of liberating Palestine was armed struggle, but distinguished between Jews or Jewish believers and Zionists, and set the goal of the movement as the establishment of a progressive, democratic, non-sectarian Palestinian state in which Jews, Christians, and Muslims could peacefully coexist. After the Battle of Kalam, the PLO engaged in a series of violent struggles, including a series of hijackings (such as the 1970 Jordan hijackings, the September 1972 Munich Olympics, and the August 1973 Japan Airlines hijacking), which continued until the early 1970s, and displeased the Arab ruling class. In particular, during the Jordanian civil war in September 1970, the PLO was subjected to severe repression by the Jordanian army, and was forced to move its base of operations from Jordan to Lebanon (this repression is called "Black September"). ...
