A haiku poet from the early Edo period. Born in Shinano Province. His real name was Iwanami Shoemon Masataka. He was commonly known as Kawai Sogoro. He served the Nagashima Domain in Ise, but after retiring he studied Shintoism and waka poetry in Edo, and began studying under Basho from around 1685. He accompanied his teacher on his journeys to Kashima and Oku no Hosomichi. 江戸前期の俳人。信濃国の人。本名岩波庄右衛門正字(まさたか)。通称河合惣五郎。伊勢の長島藩に仕えたが、致仕して江戸で神道・歌学などを修め、貞享二年(一六八五)ごろから芭蕉に師事。師の「鹿島紀行」「奥の細道」の旅に随行した。主著「曾良旅日記」。慶安二~宝永七年(一六四九‐一七一〇)
