A duchy that controlled the Lombardy region of northern Italy. In northern Italy, where republican political forces were prevalent, it is a good example of a city (Milan) successfully forming a great power by adopting a monarchical form of government (principality). Its progress coincides with the rise of the Visconti family. In 1311, Matteo I established lordship over Milan with the support of the emperor, and in 1330, Azzone had the citizens call himself "Eternal Ruler," clearly marking the transition to a monarchy. In 1395, Gian Galeazzo was granted the title of duke by the emperor, and the history of the duchy began. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
