A group of Hausa nations established in northern Nigeria. The exact date of their founding is unclear, but at least by the 14th century, seven or eight small nations were established with a king at the center, which became Islamic and formed a loose alliance. These nations developed around walled cities. Countries such as Kano and Katsina in particular prospered through trade with the Sahara. However, in the mid-19th century, they were conquered by jihad (holy war) led by the Fulbe (Fulani) people. The Kano Annals, written in Arabic in the 19th century, are a valuable historical resource on the Hausa nations. → Related articles Empire of Songhai | Leo Africanus Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
