Izumizaki Cave - Izumizaki Cave

This is a decorated cave from the late Kofun period located in Shiraishiyama, Izumizaki, Nishishirakawa-gun, Fukushima Prefecture. It is located on the north bank of the Izumi River, which flows into the upper reaches of the Abukuma River, and is one of three caves formed on the southern face of a hill made of Tertiary tuff. It was discovered in December 1933 (Showa 8) during a prefectural road improvement project, and it was found to have murals on the burial chamber. It is famous in academic history as the first site to confirm the custom of decorating burial chambers, even in the Tohoku region, far from Kyushu. The cave is about 2 meters square and 1 meter high, and is characterized by its square ceiling and the raised coffin floor along the back wall. The back wall, left and right walls, and ceiling are painted with red paint to depict horse-riding figures, groups of men and women, horses, spiral patterns, circular patterns, bead patterns, and triangular patterns. It dates back to the first half of the 7th century. It was designated a national historic site in 1951. A photo of the mural is on display at the Izumizaki Museum.

福島県西白河(にししらかわ)郡泉崎村大字泉崎字白石山に所在する古墳時代後期の装飾横穴。阿武隈(あぶくま)川上流に注ぐ泉川の北岸に位置し、第三紀凝灰岩からなる丘陵南面に形成された3基の横穴の一つ。1933年（昭和8）12月、県道改良工事中に発見され、玄室(げんしつ)に壁画のあることがわかった。九州よりはるか離れた東北地方においても、墓室を被飾する風習のあったことを確認した初の遺跡として、学史に名高い。横穴は約2メートル角、高さ1メートルほどで、方形造(ほうぎょうづくり)の天井と、奥壁(おくへき)に沿う一段高い造り出し棺床(かんしょう)は、この横穴を特色づけている。奥壁と左右壁、天井には赤色塗料により、騎馬人物、男女群像、馬、渦文、円文、珠文、それに三角文を描出している。7世紀前葉に属する。34年国の史跡に指定。壁画の写真が泉崎資料館に展示されている。
