[Died] c. 200. Saint of Lyon, martyr, and anti-heresy church father. Latin name Irenaeus. He was ordained under the teachings of Polycarp, a disciple of John the Apostle, and later became bishop of Lyon, converting many people to Christianity. His book, Adversus Haereses, consists of five books and contains a detailed explanation of Gnosticism and other heresies. He criticized the Gnostics, who based many of their ideas on Anaxagoras, Empedocles, and Plato, arguing that the creator of all things is one God and that God created everything freely and from nothing, not according to necessity, and became an important testimony for the early Christian church. He also stated that all correct churches inherited the correct faith from the apostles and their disciples, and stated his belief in the truth of the gospels and the reality of the body and blood of Christ in the Eucharist, and asserted the superiority of the Church of Rome. Other works translated into Armenian attempt to prove the truth of the gospel by means of prophecies in the Old Testament.

聖人，殉教者，反異端的教父。ラテン名イレナエウス Irenaeus。使徒ヨハネの弟子ポリュカルポスの教導で聖職につき，のちリヨンの司教となり，多くの改宗者を出す。その著書中『異端駁論』 Adversus haeresesは5巻から成り，グノーシス派と他の異端の詳しい説明を含み，万物の創造者は唯一の神であり，神は必然に従ってではなく自由に，しかも無から創りたもうたとして，その観念の多くをアナクサゴラス，エンペドクレス，プラトンらに依拠するグノーシス派を論難し，初期キリスト教会の重要な証言となった。さらに彼は，すべての正しい教会は正しい信仰を使徒とその弟子から継承しているとし，福音書の真理性と聖餐におけるキリストの肉体と血の実在に対する信仰を述べ，ローマ教会の卓越性を主張した。アルメニア語に訳された他の著作では，旧約聖書中の預言によって福音の真理の証明を試みている。祝日6月 28日。
