Dancing Nembutsu - Odorinembutsu

Japanese:
Dancing Nembutsu - Odorinembutsu
A dance in which many people dance while chanting the Nembutsu, entering a state of samadhi. The joy of attaining faith and going to paradise naturally manifests itself in the dance. This was started by Kuya in the mid-Heian period in the marketplaces and intersections of Kyoto, but from the end of the Heian period onwards, it was also practiced in parts of the Yuzu Nembutsu and Jodo sects, and spread. In the mid-Kamakura period, Ippen appeared and promoted this as a gesture of devotion to the Nembutsu, and dancing Nembutsu spread rapidly along with the travels of Nembutsu practitioners and the expansion of the Ji sect. Ippen's Nembutsu was a thorough oral recitation of the Nembutsu, which recognized the cause of going to paradise in the chanting itself, and it can be said that dancing Nembutsu has an ethnic religious collectivity and a magical quality. From the Muromachi period onwards, it became a performing art among the general public, eventually giving rise to Mibu Kyogen, Rokusai Nembutsu, and Awasai Nembutsu.
