A fast and lively dance in 6/8 or 12/8 that was popular during the Baroque period (1600-1750). It is also called a jig. It originated from an Irish folk dance that was very popular around the 15th and 16th centuries. It is a dance performed by soloists or couples, characterized by lively leaps, and appears as a sideshow in Shakespeare's plays, as well as in English keyboard music of the time (bird, bull). It became popular on the continent from the late 17th century, and two styles were born. One is the French jig, which shows contrapuntal writing in slow 3/4 or compound 2/4, and the other is the Italian jig, which is simple and clear in fast 9/8 or 12/8. In French lute and harpsichord suites, it is often placed immediately after the sarabande (Couperin, Rameau). In the 18th century, the Italian jig became established throughout Europe, and was often used as the final movement of suites and sonatas. There are a few examples from the 19th century onwards (Schumann, Debussy). [Toshiko Sekine] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
