A general term for insects belonging to the Rhagionidae family of the Diptera order. The name comes from the fact that their long, slender legs resemble those of a water bird called a snipe. There are about 400 species recorded worldwide, with about 27 recorded in Japan. Although they are closely related to the Tabanidae family, they do not attack and suck the blood of cattle or horses. However, the lesser brown fly Atherix fontenalis and the common brown fly A. morimotoi are known to suck the blood of frogs. The larvae are terrestrial or aquatic, and the terrestrial ones live in rotting wood, moist soil, humus, etc. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
