In medieval France, there was no common law applicable to the entire kingdom, and it was an era of the division of local customary laws. These customary laws were not officially compiled until the end of the 15th century, but several privately selected customary law books had already appeared since the 13th century. The Book of Customary Laws of Beauvais is a representative example, along with the Decrees of Saint Louis and the Book of Customary Laws of Normandy. The author was Philippe de Beaumanoir (c. 1250-1296), who served as a bailly (deputy) for the County of Clermont in the Beauvais region, and was also known as a poet.
