1537‐1619 Italian anatomist. Italian name Girolamo Fabrizio. He became professor of anatomy at the University of Padua in 1565, succeeding G. Fallopio. In 1603, he discovered venous valves, illustrated them in detail, and described their function. The circular anatomical staircase lecture hall that he designed and had built became a model for other universities, and still stands today. He also made contributions to comparative anatomy and embryology, and was a surgeon. He was the teacher of W. Harvey, who discovered blood circulation.
