This is the festival music of the Gion Festival in Kyoto. It is played on the floats during the parade on July 17th. The floats seen today can be traced back to the revival of the floats in 1500 (Meiō 9), but the history of the music is unknown. The music that is passed down today is characterized by the sound of gongs, as expressed by the popular name "konchikichin," and is composed of a dozen gongs, several shime-daiko drums, and a dozen flutes (ryuteki or noh flutes). Each of the ten floats has about 30 unique songs. Broadly speaking, there are dedication music, transitional music (until Shijo Kawaramachi, slow tempo), and return music (after Shijo Kawaramachi, fast tempo). In addition, there are some regional festival music pieces that bear the name Gion bayashi, and there is also geza music.
