The capital of Argentina. The metropolitan area, which is under direct federal control, has an area of 200 km2 and a population of 2,988,006 (1995). The metropolitan area, including the suburbs, has an area of 1,700 km2 and a population of 12,582,321 (1991), accounting for 38% of the country's total population. It is located 240 km upstream from the Atlantic Ocean, on the southwest bank of the Rio de la Plata, at a point where the river is 50 km wide. It has long been an important trading port, and its citizens are called porteños, which means "people of the port." It has been called the "Paris of South America," and is the political, economic, social, and cultural center of the country, and has also flourished as the cultural center of South America.
