A medieval Iraqi storyteller. Born in Masha'n, near Basra in southern Iraq. Educated at a school in Basra, he worked as a clerk in the Caliphate. He later devoted himself to literature, and rose to fame when he published the Maqāmāt, a collection of 50 stories written in rhymed prose in the maqāma style. Each story has a common protagonist, Abu Zayd of Salūj, whose anecdotes are told by Hammam's son, Harith, as stories he heard. The protagonist is a clown who teases people and entertains with his wit, and the stories are often accompanied by poems, making them a kind of song story. He was heavily influenced by Hamazani, a maqāma writer from about half a century earlier. His works are said to be masterpieces, and have long been used as school materials.
