A tribe of American Indians who live in the Great Basin, which covers most of Nevada and the states of Utah, Oregon, California, and Idaho, and who speak a variety of languages of the Plateau branch of the Shoshone language family. The population is estimated at about 4,000, and they live mainly on designated reservations and their surrounding areas. The Southern Paiute speak Ute-Chemewebi and are also called the True Paiutes, while the Northern Paiute are also called the Mono in California and the Paviotso in Nevada.
