Paiute - Paiute (English spelling)
A tribe of American Indians who live in the Great Basin, which covers most of Nevada and the states of Utah, Oregon, California, and Idaho, and who speak a variety of languages ​​of the Plateau branch of the Shoshone language family. The population is estimated at about 4,000, and they live mainly on designated reservations and their surrounding areas. The Southern Paiute speak Ute-Chemewebi and are also called the True Paiutes, while the Northern Paiute are also called the Mono in California and the Paviotso in Nevada. They make their living by gathering acorns, pine nuts, and horse chestnuts, and by small-scale hunting, and make clothing and tents from the skins of wild animals. They do not have bands or regional organizations, and almost none of their old customs remain, except for shamanism.
