...There are fjords on both sides of the strait. The strait's name comes from John Davis, an Englishman who explored this area in 1585-87. It was once an active whaling area.

...He also brought back a Greenland Eskimo on his first voyage, but mistook him for a Khitan and took him for evidence of his arrival in East Asia. In 1585-87, the Englishman John Davis (1550?-1605) discovered Davis Strait between Greenland and Baffin Island, and passed through the Arctic Circle. Another Englishman, Henry Hudson (?-1611), after failing to find a Northeast Passage, went south and explored the coast of North America, discovering the Hudson River and Hudson Bay, but was left behind by his subordinates in 1611 and died there.
