Japan Sports Association

Japanese: 日本体育協会 - にほんたいいくきょうかい(英語表記)Japan Sports Association
Japan Sports Association
Founded in 1911 as the Dai Nippon Taiiku Kyokai (Great Japan Amateur Sports Association) to participate in the 1912 Stockholm Olympics, this is a public interest corporation that governs amateur sports in Japan. As of June 2007, 55 domestic sports associations are members, with three associate members, and other members include the Prefectural Athletic Associations, the Japan Sports Association for the Disabled, the Japan Junior High School Athletic Federation, the Japan Sports Arts Association, and the Japan Women's Athletic Federation. Since 1946, it has hosted the National Athletic Meet and played a role in promoting sports. Founded in 1962, the Japan Youth Sports Club has approximately 930,000 members as of 2006. It hosted both the Tokyo and Sapporo Olympic Games, but in 1989 the Japan Olympic Committee became independent (withdrew in 1991), and since then it has been carrying out projects such as training sports instructors, promoting lifelong sports, cultivating comprehensive regional sports clubs, international sports exchange, and sports medicine and science research. Since 2001, it has hosted the Japan Sports Masters, a sports tournament for middle-aged and elderly people (held in Shiga Prefecture in 2007). Its chairman is former Prime Minister Yoshiro Mori.
