Radiation-chemical reaction

When a material is irradiated with charged particles or electromagnetic radiation, the radiation primarily interacts with the electrons in the material to give up its energy. As a result, ionization occurs, in which the electrons in the material that have gained energy are knocked out, and electronic excitation occurs, in which the electrons are raised to a higher energy level. Some of the ions produced by ionization recombine, and some of the excited states cause the dissociation of chemical bonds, resulting in the production of ions, radicals, and excited states. All of these chemical species are highly reactive and are called intermediately active species or short-lived active species.

物質中に荷電粒子や電磁波放射線が照射されると，放射線は主として物質中の電子と相互作用してそのエネルギーを与える。その結果，エネルギーを得た物質中の電子がたたき出されるイオン化と，高いエネルギー準位に上げられる電子励起が起こる。イオン化によって生じたイオンが一部再結合し，また励起状態が一部化学結合の解離をひき起こしたりする過程を経て，イオン，ラジカル，励起状態が生成される。これらの化学種はいずれも反応性に富んでおり，中間活性種または短寿命活性種と呼ばれる。
