A god in the ancient Greek mystery religion Orphism. He was the son of Zeus and his daughter Persephone, who had been transformed into a snake. He was beloved by his father and promised to be his successor. He was entrusted to Apollo and Curetes and raised secretly in the mountains of Parnassus. When Zeus' wife Hera found out, she incited the Titans to massacre the infant god. The Titans tore him apart, cooked his flesh, and ate it. When Zeus found out, he burned him to death with lightning and created humans from his ashes. According to Orphic doctrine, humans came to have a divine soul, which was nothing other than a fragment of Zagreus, in a prison of their evil bodies derived from the Titans. Meanwhile, Zagreus' heart, which had not yet been eaten by the Titans and continued to beat, was given to Zeus by Athena, who then drank it or gave it to Semele, who then had intercourse with his lover and gave birth to Dionysus, who was actually Zagreus reincarnated.
