In sea reclamation, this refers to closing the opening between the embankment and the sea at the end of construction of a tide-retaining embankment to protect the reclaimed land from the sea, completely blocking seawater. When constructing a tide-retaining embankment, part of it is left unbuilt from the beginning, and instead, bed consolidation work that forms the base of the tide-retaining opening and protective work for the embankment on both sides are carried out, and when the embankment other than the tide-retaining opening is completed to 80% of the planned height, the tide-retaining opening is closed on a short-term basis. In rare cases, a drainage gate is built at the location of the tide-retaining opening from the beginning, and the gate is left open. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
