Ascetic monks were believed to have mastered magical powers by entering the mountains and undergoing ascetic practices, they could compete at any time, but it was a regular event to test their powers after their ascetic training in the mountains. The most famous such competitions have been held since ancient times on Mt. Hiei, Mt. Omine, Mt. Kumano, Mt. Haguro, and Mt. Hiko. In these competitions, participants are divided into two groups of three or ten people, and take turns competing with each other.
