...It can also refer to settlements that farmers developed and settled in seclusion to avoid taxes. Both were settlements that had withdrawn from the political and administrative systems of the time, and are also called hidden farm villages or hermit farm villages. Many were located on terraces in mountainous areas or on cliffs along rocky coasts in coastal areas, and they cultivated barnyard millet, beans, foxtail millet, corn, buckwheat, and other crops by slash-and-burn agriculture.
