Sheraton, Thomas

Japanese: シェラトン(英語表記)Sheraton, Thomas
Sheraton, Thomas
Born 1751 in Stockton-on-Tees, Durham
[Died] October 22, 1806, London. British furniture designer and clergyman. It is clear that he trained as a furniture maker, but it is unclear whether he actually produced furniture. He had a great influence not only in England but also in continental Europe and America in the late 18th century and early 19th century with the many furniture designs included in his books, such as the Cabinet Maker and Upholsterer's Drawing Book (1791), the Cabinet Dictionary (1803), and the Encyclopedia of Furniture (completed posthumously). His name is the name of a style, characterized by slender legs, large, unadorned surfaces, and simple contours.
