Shellac

Also known as shellac. A natural resin obtained from the secretions of the lac scale insect, found in India, Myanmar, Thailand, Indochina, etc. A pale yellow to yellowish brown, transparent or translucent, brittle, flaky or powdery substance. Melting point 70-100°C. Used in varnishes, binders for electrical insulating molded products, sealing wax, etc. It was the main material for records until the appearance of vinyl LP records.

セラックとも。インド，ミャンマー，タイ，インドシナなどに分布するラックカイガラムシの分泌物から得られる天然樹脂。淡黄〜黄褐色，透明ないし半透明のもろい片状または粉末状物質。融点70〜100℃。ワニス，電気絶縁用成形品の結合剤，封蝋などに使用。ビニル系のLPレコード盤が出現するまでは主要なレコード材料であった。
