Kitchen unit - Kitchen unit (English)

When building a house, the most time-consuming part is the area around the water, such as the bathroom and kitchen. Kitchen units are one of the housing components that were created by applying industrialized techniques to this area, with the aim of prefabricating the sink and other equipment in a single unit in a factory and transporting it to the construction site for installation. There are various types, but wall-type units are the most common.

In Japan, the prototype of the current kitchen was created around 1970 (Showa 45), and various ingenious features were added after that to create the convenient ready-made kitchen equipment we know today. The most familiar of these is the system kitchen, which also originated from the kitchen unit.

住宅をつくるとき、いちばん手間のかかるところは浴室や台所のような水回りの部分である。ここに工業化の手法を応用して、流し台を中心にした設備を一つの塊としてあらかじめ工場でつくり、それを現場に運んで組み込ませるねらいで生まれた住宅部品の一つがキッチンユニットである。種々の形式があるが、壁形のユニットがもっとも一般的である。

　日本で現在の原形がつくられたのは1970年（昭和45）ころで、その後さまざまなくふうが加えられ、現在のように便利な既製品の台所設備ができあがった。そのなかでなじみ深いのはシステムキッチンであるが、これもキッチンユニットから生まれたものである。
