1911‐87 French actor and playwright. Born in Marseille, he founded the theatre company Grey Curtain with Louis Ducroux and was active in avant-garde theatre from before the Second World War, playing leading roles in around 50 plays until 1943 when he was forced to recuperate due to illness. He also began writing plays at the same time, and made his debut in the Paris theatre scene with Am straum Gram in 1944. His first real success was with The Shack (1947), and it was the first play that sparked a long-running boom after the war. From then until the 1970s, he wrote new plays almost every year, presenting around 30 comedies, most of which were boulevard plays dealing with complicated relationships between men and women.
